The Sustainable Underwear Checklist for EU Buyers
Selling "sustainable" underwear into the EU is no longer a marketing choice — it is a compliance discipline. Regulators and retailers increasingly expect claims to be specific, substantiated and verifiable, and vague "eco" language is a liability. This checklist covers what to lock down so your sustainability claims are ones you can actually prove.
1. Get the fibre right — and certified
If you claim organic, you need GOTS. The Global Organic Textile Standard certifies that the product is made from certified organic fibres and processed to strict environmental and social criteria across the chain.
Two documents matter, and buyers routinely confuse them:
- Scope Certificate — proves the *manufacturer* is GOTS-certified.
- Transaction Certificate (TC) — proves a *specific shipment* is GOTS goods. You need the TC to make organic claims at retail on those goods.
Sembol offers a GOTS organic cotton option (Scope Certificate CU1182451GOTS, Control Union). Ask for the transaction certificate on the actual order you intend to sell as organic.
2. Prove product safety — OEKO-TEX
Sustainability and safety are different claims; cover both. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished textile for harmful substances, and its Class I tier applies the strictest limits — those set for baby articles.
For underwear, worn against the skin all day, Class I is the headline safety signal. Sembol's fabric is certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I (cert 16.HTR.92541, Hohenstein). Verify the certificate number and validity, and confirm it covers your goods.

3. Insist on traceability
A green claim is only as good as the chain behind it. The shorter and more transparent the supply chain, the easier every claim is to substantiate. A manufacturer that owns spinning, knitting, dyeing, finishing and sewing under one roof can trace material from yarn to garment — which is exactly what regulators and serious retailers now ask for. Ask any prospective supplier which steps they perform themselves.
4. Watch the greenwashing rules
The EU is tightening the rules on environmental claims, so say only what you can prove:
- Be specific. "GOTS-certified organic cotton" beats "eco-friendly."
- Avoid vague blanket claims like "green" or "natural" with nothing behind them.
- Attach evidence to every claim — certificate numbers, scope, validity.
- Use official licensed logos (OEKO-TEX, GOTS), never redrawn look-alikes, and only while valid and covering the goods.
Treat marketing copy as something you may have to defend, because increasingly you will.
5. Fix the packaging
Packaging is part of the sustainability story and, in the EU, part of the compliance picture:
- Reduce and choose recyclable polybags and outer packaging.
- Label materials for recycling where required in your market.
- Don't over-claim on packaging either — "recyclable where facilities exist" beats an unqualified symbol.
- Keep an eye on evolving EU packaging and waste requirements for your destination markets.
6. Confirm the paperwork before bulk
For EU retail, the mandatory basics — fibre composition, care instructions, size, and country of origin in the required language(s) — must be right before production. Fixing labels after bulk is expensive. Bundle your sustainability documentation (certificates, TCs) with this compliance pack so everything is ready before goods ship.
The EU buyer's checklist, at a glance
- [ ] Organic claim backed by GOTS — Scope Certificate *and* Transaction Certificate.
- [ ] Safety proven via OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I — number and validity checked.
- [ ] Traceability confirmed — ask which steps the maker performs in-house.
- [ ] Marketing claims specific and evidenced, no vague "eco" language.
- [ ] Licensed logos only, current and covering the goods.
- [ ] Packaging reduced, recyclable and honestly labelled.
- [ ] Mandatory labelling correct in the right languages before bulk.
The buyer's takeaway
Sustainable selling in the EU rewards precision, not slogans. Certify the fibre, prove the safety, secure the traceability, and phrase every claim as something you can evidence — then your sustainability story becomes an asset instead of a risk.
Sembol offers GOTS organic cotton and OEKO-TEX Class I certified fabric, with full yarn-to-garment traceability in-house — the documentation and chain that let EU buyers claim sustainability and prove it.
